A birthing comb is a tool, often made of wood, that is used during labor to manage pain through acupressure and distraction.The comb is gripped in the palm of the hand, with the teeth pressing on acupressure points in the palm, such as the Lao Gong point. The sensation provides a form of pain relief by distracting the brain from the intensity of contractions, which is explained by the Gate Control Theory of pain.
