With both of my boys, I was induced. My 1st experience was quite simply a shamble to be honest so when I was then induced 2nd time around, I was determined to make it really positive for my myself and my baby.
I was being induced because I had gone past my estimated due date and my waters had broken at home but there was no progression with labour starting spontaneously. (At this point I kind of wished I would of trusted my body more and gave myself some time to do its thing) Anyway, I was told by my community midwife to call on the Friday morning (15/04/22) at 8am to see what the bed space was like, they said I could go in from 10am so that's what I did.
The drive on the way to the hospital I was filled with so many mixed emotions. Leaving my other little boy with my Mum I almost felt guilty because I usually spend all my time with him and I felt like it was the beginning of sharing my time with the new baby. But I was so excited that I would be leaving the hospital with my little boy in the next few days.
I arrived at the N&N just after 10am and was shown to my room on Delivery Suite, I had such a lovely team of Midwives, they were all so friendly and made me feel so welcomed and safe.
Admittedly, it was a bit of a wait for things to get going, but me and my partner kept busy by listening to music we liked, we watched a comedy on the iPad, I kept as mobile as I could to make sure baby was in a good position to be born and I had a few yummy snacks and water on the go to keep me hydrated and lots of energy for when I needed it.
Fast forward a few hours and I had my waters broken to see if my body would start labour but not much happened, of course I wanted things to get going but I was actually quite happy with my whole nut dairy milk (fave) and Step Brothers film on in the background!
After not much progression, I then later accepted to have the hormone drip in place, (a bag of artificial oxytocin going through a cannula in my hand, to kick start labour off) I knew this sh*t was good as it certainly got things going in my 1st labour!
I don't remember the amount of oxytocin I was having per hour through my cannula but I just remember a point when it had clearly kicked in and I thought oh f*ck here we go! Saying that, I did quickly remember my calm breathing techniques and began listening to my Hypnosis Tracks and really got in the zone. My contractions did get pretty intense but I was fully trying to work with my body and not against it so the intensity didn't get out of control. The main thing for me was about staying focused because that's something I totally lost in my 1st labour and it's pretty difficult to get back.
After contracting for just over 2 hours, I knew he was ready to be born, the pressure down below changed a lot and my body was pushing on its own! I was mooing like a cow on a farm but who cares, it was working for me! I knew then I was defiantly in the birthing stage..
2 controlled pushes later and my little handsome boy was born. No tears and cuts and I was bloody over the moon! I had active management to birth my placenta and to be honest, I didn't even know it had been delivered, I was too wrapped up in my new bundle of perfectness! I then attempted breastfeeding for the 1st time ever and felt on bloody cloud 9! I was assisted with a shower, had a cuppa and toast and was just so overwhelmed and thrilled with how everything went and couldn't wait to share my POSITIVE story with everyone!
So let me tell you, not all induction stories are bad or horrible or long, some are actually quite perfect. It's so important to make the right decision for you and your baby.
P.S you can never fail childbirth!
